What Fits, What Is Not Allowed and Disposal in Wilson County
Before a dumpster arrives, it helps to know three things: what you can load, what you cannot, and where the box can sit. This page pulls together the general rules most roll-off haulers follow and what the City of Wilson and Wilson County publish about trash and disposal. Rules change, so treat this as a guide and confirm with your hauler, the city or the county. Wilson NC Dumpster Rental is a referral service operated by Recover Profits Now. We do not own trucks or containers; the independent hauler you are connected with quotes, delivers and hauls. Call (252) 650-5620 to reach a local hauler.
What usually can go in a roll-off
- Household junk, furniture, boxes and clothing
- Drywall, lumber, trim, cabinets, doors and windows
- Carpet, pad, laminate and vinyl flooring
- Asphalt shingles, felt, flashing and gutters
- Yard waste: branches, shrubs, leaves (ask about mixing it with other debris)
- Concrete, brick, block and dirt, in a small box and usually as a separate load
- Siding, fencing, decking and old barn wood and tin
What is usually not allowed
- Hazardous waste: paint (unless fully dried), solvents, pesticides, pool chemicals and oil
- Batteries: car, boat and lithium batteries
- Fuel and pressurized tanks: propane cylinders, gas cans and fuel tanks
- Tires, unless the hauler accepts them for a fee
- Appliances with refrigerant (refrigerators, freezers, AC units), unless the hauler handles them separately
- Asbestos or suspected asbestos material
- Medical waste
- Hot ashes and burned debris
Every hauler has its own list. Ask before you load anything you are not sure about.
City of Wilson collection rules
The City of Wilson's Environmental Services page sets out what city crews will and will not take:
- Construction, remodeling and contractor debris "is the responsibility of the homeowner (or the contractor)." Crews will not collect construction and remodeling debris, roofing shingles, dirt or sod, concrete, rocks, gravel, auto parts, flammables, hot ashes, furnaces or stumps. Those may go to the Wilson County Landfill, where a fee may apply.
- Yard waste from contract labor is not removed by the city.
- Bulky items, meaning things that will not fit in a regular garbage truck, such as furniture, appliances, water heaters, AC units, limbs over 4 feet and tires, are picked up by request at 252-399-2424 or through the Fix-It Wilson app. Set them behind the curb, away from trees, parked cars, mailboxes, water meters and utility boxes.
- Limbs must be bundled, no longer than 4 feet and no more than 100 pounds. Loose leaves are collected from November 1 to March 1.
- Sweeping or blowing yard waste into the curb, street or storm drains is unlawful.
- Each home gets one 96-gallon roll-out cart at no charge, set out before 7:00 a.m. and kept out of the street.
Wilson County Landfill
According to the county's landfill page:
- It is at 2400 Hwy 42 East, about a mile east of US 301 toward Pinetops and Macclesfield, next to the county animal shelter.
- Hours are 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. Saturday from 8:00 a.m. to noon is for residential customers only, with household trash, small C&D loads from their own residence and yard waste.
- Construction and demolition debris is listed at $43 per ton.
- Cash, check and credit cards are accepted, except American Express.
- It closes on listed holidays, including Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
County convenience centers
Wilson County runs 13 convenience centers, including sites at Rock Ridge, Stantonsburg, Gardners, Elm City, Lucama, Sims and Landfill Road. The county page says they:
- Are open Monday through Saturday 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday 1 to 6 p.m., with Rock Ridge, Stantonsburg and Gardners closed Wednesdays.
- Take household garbage, white goods, recyclables, up to five tires off the rim, electronics and, at certain sites, mattresses and furniture.
- Do not take construction and demolition debris, "including roofing (shingles), boards, siding, bricks, concrete, and carpet," or commercial waste.
- Require a valid permit and serve households in the unincorporated Solid Waste District. Incorporated towns and cities are not in the District.
Where to put the dumpster
- Private property first. A driveway, side yard or gravel pad is simplest.
- Street or sidewalk. If the box must sit on a public street, sidewalk or right-of-way, ask the City of Wilson, or your town hall in Elm City, Lucama, Stantonsburg or another town, whether a permit is required.
- Historic districts. Old Wilson, West Nash and Broad-Kenan are local historic districts under the city's Historic Preservation Commission. Check with the city before demolition or exterior changes there.
- Clearance. The truck needs a straight approach and room overhead, clear of power lines and branches.
- Ground. Boards under the rails protect pavement. Keep the truck off septic fields and soft ground.
- Flood zones. The city's Development Services Department offers free flood zone determinations for city properties at (252) 399-2220.
Loading rules that save money
- Nothing above the top rail. Overfilled boxes may not be hauled until they are leveled.
- Heavy material on the bottom and spread out.
- Keep concrete, dirt and brick in a separate small box when possible.
- Tarp the box before rain.
- Keep the box covered or watched so others do not fill it.
